Walmart founder Marc Lore and his team's ambitious project of creating a new city in the United States. This city, environmentally sustainable, socially equitable, and technologically advanced, is an extensively experimental venture with astronomical costs of around $400 billion (approximately 500 trillion won), surpassing the size of Seoul (150,000 acres or 608 square kilometers). Its immense symbolic significance and experimental nature, coupled with the unknown outcome of its success, make it a project of considerable uncertainty.

The city is meticulously planned, incorporating energy circulation, eco-friendly design, and a self-sufficient renewable energy system. It is expected to operate on 100% renewable energy, achieving zero carbon emissions. The integration of public transportation and green spaces for city residents enables walking and cycling anywhere. Additionally, the implementation of a social system that provides affordable housing and equal economic opportunities is based on the latest innovations in transportation, communication, and infrastructure.

Telosa, aiming for an ideal future, according to its founder Marc Lore, drew inspiration from the American social theorist Henry George and goes beyond conventional smart cities by embodying an alternative philosophy to capitalism. Despite being innovative, its greatest advantage is also its most significant drawback – the uncertainty of whether it can realize an unprecedented vision for the future, even at the considerable cost incurred.

The opinions on Telosa are divided due to the colossal expenditure involved in this 40-year-long experiment. Supporters argue that, even if the initial goals are not fully achieved, the initiative to start and construct the city will inspire other cities to emulate Telosa and undertake constructive challenges for the future.

이상적인 미를 추구하는 텔로사는 마크로어 설립자에 따르면 미국사회이론가인 헨리 조지에게 영감을 받았다고 하며, 자본주의의 대안 철학까지 갖추어 근본을 건드리는 데 네옴시티나 마스다르, 기타 어느 스마트시티보다도 혁신적이다. 가장 큰 장점이지만 그만큼 막대한 비용을 들여서라도 한번도 인류가 이룩하지 못한 위대한 미래상을 구현할 수 있는지 미지수라는 점이 가장 큰 단점이기도 하다.

40년 장기간동안 어마어마한 비용이 수반되는 실험이라는 점에서 찬반 양론이 분분하지만, 찬성하는 쪽에서는 당초 목표에 못미치더라도 착수해서 건설해가는 과정으로도 텔로사를 모방하는 도시들이 생겨나고 미래를 위한 건설적인 도전을 던져줄 것이라는 평가다.
